Is the UK by-election win by the Greens a sign of things to come?

In a shocking blow to Labour, Hannah Spencer, a local plumber and councillor of the Green Party, won the by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Gorton and Denton that was held on 26 February 2026 following the resignation of Labour’s Andrew Gwynne on health grounds.

Despite Gorton and Denton having been a traditionally safe Labour seat, it only managed to get to third place with 9,364 votes. The Greens received 14,980 votes, while Reform UK managed to garner 10,578 votes. As for the Conservatives, well, they only received a humiliating 706 votes. Jake Wallis Simons, writing for the Daily Telegraph went on the attack referring to the “extremist victory” as “one step closer to the abyss.”

The Greens, led by the dynamic Jewish, gay and vegan, Zack Polanski, represents anything but an abyss, with sound social and environmental policies and a firm stance against the genocide in Gaza. Its Manifesto is a breath of fresh air and as such is proving a threat to both wish-washy Labour on the one side and the contentious right-wingers on the other.

The overwhelming victory is certainly a sign that Labour’s covert capitalist and pro-Israeli agenda has been exposed and that people are becoming more aware of a compromised Government.

However, the victory is far from a guarantee that the electorate will vote in a like manner in a general election, especially with the threat of Reform UK’s ultra right-wing Nigel Farage, who is gaining more and more ground.

Nevertheless, with Labour carelessly losing the hearts and minds of its followers, by-election courage may just be bold enough to take the giant step and vote Green in the next national election. As Polanski claimed after the results in an interview with the BBC: “It’s undoubtedly a moment … that has the potential to transform the face of British politics.”
